The Scrapes Live Soundtrackin'

Hello all...

Well believe it or not we Scrapes do keep the work going in the shadows. Earlier this year we created a soundtrack to Love & Other Ecologies, a short film by Melody Woodnutt, and now we shall perform at its premiere in Melbourne, a live version of the soundtrack, yes indeed!

DETAILS FOR IT ARE HERRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I will get back here and write another one of those Scrapes history bits eventually though it's generally easier to follow us on Facebook and catch updates there as Blogger is...well who looks at it anymore?

So see you in Melbourne on 14 NOVEMBER..........and perhaps another date while I'm down there...we're working on it.

We'll have some more announcements before the year is out no doubt...

Transmission....over.

Adam

Reminiscences on 10 Years of Scrapes (and still going) Part 1

10 Years of Scrapes. Back in early 2009 Ryan and I got together for our first lot of rehearsals at the sharehouse I lived in in Woolloongabba on Brisbane's inner south and we knew pretty well immediately we had something going that we liked. Within a couple of months we were at the Conservatorium of Music using their studio gear to record this first demo CDR in the orchestral hall, me at one end with a totally acoustic violin and Ryan at the other with his mammoth VASE amp and guitar. That battle laid the ground for these tracks followed by some overdubs which would soon become loops instead in live performances (if there even was electricity at the gig - I recall a gig in an abandoned house in Mitchelton that was forcibly acoustic - we may have recordings for that somewhere...) and all of that boring whatever. Point is 10 years ago we made THIS RACKET (below too) which you can make your own by heading over to bandcamp. We have no hard copies anymore. If you run a label and would love to release it in plush fashion with 500 pages of boring twaddle from me explaining every second of every day leading up to it like that Neil Young bio Shakey then drop us a line (or even if you'd just do a CD we'd probably think about it). Cover art is a unique piece by my old man Kim B. Cadell whose art has adorned every Scrapes album since thus far. Composition-wise a lot of the basic bits came from older compositions of mine that I made into a little demo very few people got called "Transmissions from a Traveller" (seedy sounding if you've got a filthy mind... and I know a lot of you do) but that also were string quartets such as Cold Shoulders which you can hear the String Quartet versh of HERE. Other bits then came from various ideas Ryan had that didn't fit with his band at the time Nikko (which I was also in for a time once we got The Scrapes rollin') and from our mutual love of the VU, Spacemen 3 etc. Yep. If you've read this far I applaud you. 10 Years of Scrapes...and still counting...we're quiet bastards but we're there...Thanks to all for your continuing interest. Adam (& Ryan).

Breath Or Echo

Documentation of November 2018 performance at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Brisbane as part of the opening of the Australia Pacific Triennial 9. This performance was a collaboration with Japanese artist Yuko Mohri, whose installation "Breath or Echo" informed and invaded our improvisation. Enjoy the full video of one of the performances above.

In Scrapes news, we shall be convening in Ryan's current homeground of Melbourne to bury ourselves in the studio and work on a soundtrack to a new 16mm film by Melody Woodnutt. Will these recordings also result in a new Scrapes LP??? Who knows...

Until next time...

Ever working in the shadows, The Scrapes.

Digital Rituals

HELLo,

The Songs of Baron Samedi is now haunting the digital realm through all your favourite and probably hated digital retailers and is also now available direct through our BANDCAMP along with the rest of the discography...well....that you know of.

The vinyl version is still available from all over the place...just google it...including directly from CONQUEST OF NOISE.

And the tape version is also still available from all over the place...once again googling should divulge your nearest supplier...and you can get it direct from the source: SOFT ABUSE.

The One True Scrapes is stirring once again to record new music....

The Songs of Baron Samedi

To those of you who missed the news because you avoid all social media like the plague - you are very smart if so - THE SONGS OF BARON SAMEDI vinyl is well and truly out and about in your local record store, or if not then from your nearest online dealer, or the LABEL THEMSELVES.

S O N G S OF B A R ON S A ME D I Available most especially from the iconic Brisbane record store ROCKING HORSE RECORDS. Buy from them if you need some guidance.

Some very fucking exciting live news on the horizon but for now we must stay schtum....wait and see....worry ye not we Scrapes are as active as ever. AND to set the record straight...as much as we love Rocking Horse as you all know we are definitely a GUITAR AND VIOLIN DUO....drums are in the mix...but very little. IF you want violin and drums check out Adam and Tony Irving's nasty little duo next time they free your mind and leave your arse on the floor in Brisvegas.

Go on then...

Les SCRAPES

ps. THE EXCEPTIONALLY BRILLIANT TAPE VERSION IS STILL AVAIL FROM SOFT ABUSE SO.....

Review of Baron Samedi tape in The Wire

Go over and get your copy of this "Sharp" album at S O F T A B U S E

Vinyl version is coming soon (it really is!) on CONQUESTOFNOISE

And as many of you know this is by no means our second release. You can hear just some of the stuff we've created and managed to wrangle into digital files, CDs and vinyls over at THE SCRAPES BANDCAMP and you can still buy CDs and vinyl of both Kali Yuga Sunrise (2011/12) and Electric Mourning Blues (2010) at your local record store, online and from ALL IS NUMBER RECORDS. These items are very very very close to becoming sold out! Whether we repress is anybody's guess.

And to further comment on the review - we Scrapes feel it is simply the RIGHT THING TO DO to acknowledge the traditional owners of Australia since our government and sadly still the vast majority of our people don't. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

Merci touts le mondes,
Adam,
Les Scrapes

Adam Cadell Solo Tape Launch 17 JAN

17 Jan 2016

Street Music Vol. 1

Tape Launch

Supported by The Steady as She Goes

AT The Junk Bar, Ashgrove, Brisbane.

Tickets $10

DOORS 6:30PM

Join Adam Cadell of local instrumentals duo The Scrapes, for an evening of broken-down fiddling tales, recently aired to audiences in New York and Helsinki. Cadell's forthcoming album "Street Music Vol. 1" continues with his dissident approach to the fiddle, but moves away from past electric drone-based works and into a regressive world of of fiddle-based storytelling, constructed from fragments of songs uncovered through ramblings with hillbillies and nomads in the US and Senegal. His 9th solo outing to date, Street Music Vol. 1 will be released as a limited edition set of hand-crafted cassettes by US label Cabin Floor Esoterica. The launch will be opened by the dark balladry of The Steady As She Goes.
