The Songs of Baron Samedi unleashed early 2015!

Greetings all,

So the announcements you've all been waiting for...at least the minor versions anyway...many more details to come.

From our new friends CONQUEST OF NOISE records:

I've been sitting on this album for quiet sometime now and very proud to announce that THE SCRAPES third album "The Songs Of Baron Samedi" will be released on Conquest Of Noise Records next Autumn 2015. It's dark, haunting soundscapes will put you into a trance or in a scene of a disturbingly beautiful movie. People have compared them to "The Dirty Three". Personally the only thing I see in common is the use of the violin. One comparison that came to mind though was "The Necks". If you've seen the Australian movie "The Boys" you'll know what I'm talking about. Live they drag you to another place thats hard to leave. They're probably the most unique band in Australia. They have raised their own personal bar with "The Songs Of Baron Samedi".

That's right the new album "The Songs of Baron Samedi" will receive a vinyl release from local Brisbane label Conquest of Noise in the first half of 2015. It promises to be very special indeed.

"The Songs of Baron Samedi" will also be unleashed on our Northern Hemisphere fiends in Cassette Tape form through the brilliant SOFT ABUSE records early in 2015.

Both of these releases will have some distinct characteristics...so you should buy them both.

Much much more on this soon.

Until then. Enjoy the Yule festivities or whatever it may be you celebrate/commiserate. You'll be hearing from us...

Live Delay For All Tonight

Hello travellers to The Scrapes' planet,

Exciting news for those of you who dig what we do but live far away from Brisbane! Our local radio station 4ZZZ 102.1 FM, and their excellent Live Delay programme are broadcasting an entire live set from our recent residency at The Bearded Lady, a bar in Brisbane's West End. This is an unusual chance for our distant listeners to hear us in our most intense environment...a dark corner at the back of a pub...

It will be broadcast 8PM Australian Eastern Standard Time tonight, Friday the 15th of August.

It will then be put up in the on demand section at the Zeds and as it appears on the Live Delay blog I imagine they'll put it up as a soundcloud stream as well...

Sections of this performance have been re-recorded in the studio recently for inclusion in our new album The Songs of Baron Samedi. See if you can figure out what we think are the choicest cuts from this delicious living creature...

Listen hard!

Regrets and Rebirths

We regret to announce that the previously advertised support slot for Dune Rats album launch on 28 June has been cancelled. The Scrapes will no longer be performing at this event. Due to an unfortunate, if honest, mistake on behalf of the booker, we are no longer on the bill. This is entirely out of our control and we apologise to any comrades who may have pre-purchased tickets. We at this stage have no idea how you would redeem the ticket cost (if you want to, we're sure the other bands would be great to see!) as it is not in our control. If you have any enquiries in this regard we can only recommend you contact Dune Rats or The Zoo directly for advice.

To lighten the mood we can happily announce, however, that we will be performing along with the brilliant Primitive Motion, at the Brisbane Fringe Festival on 22nd August at our trusty Bearded Lady. More details on this one soon!

Cheers,
Adam & Ryan

The Portal

This is pretty much what growing up in Brisbane does to your mind....one of the best things to ever come out of this town....the totally undefinable Portal. Used to see them from time to time live in the murky smoke-filled confines of Her Majesty's Basement, a metal pub (no longer exists) in the Queen st mall. Was a wild pub and a strange, swirling black mass of a band. They're sort of Death Metal but really there is no genre that truly fits this, so if you can get past the growls and the crunchy guitar tone it is some truly strange and experimental (emphasis on mental) musick....

Secrets....

This weekend 31 May, a collection of individuals, including me, will perform as the opener for a gig at The Waiting Room, Browning St, West End, Brisbane. We are Secret Black. You are not.

For anyone who knows what I'm talking about this is an important event because Ambitious Lovers are playing for the first time in yonks...one of the first bands Ryan and I played with from memory...and that was at the Waiting Room (then Browning St Studios) as well! Not to mention St Augustus!! Who is Cam Smith...they guy who mastered the vinyl version of Kali Yuga Sunrise....told it was all very mysterious....

Why you should see us Live...

Decided to post this sideways image of a live review in The Music of our aktion at The New Globe Theatre in Brisbane last weekend. The gist is that we were good.

As a sidenote tomorrow night I will be playing with new music ensemble KUPKA'S PIANO at the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Art in Fortitude Valley tomorrow night the 23rd of May followed the next week by a performance as a member of Secret Black (constituents unknown...it wouldn't be secret if I told you all about it) at the Waiting Room, 31 May. And Ryan has some Maryettas action coming up in June. We will no doubt complete recordings for the new Scrapes album...or at the very least do some more in the coming weeks. More on that stuff soon....

AND further in the future I will be releasing a duo of drum and violin free improv madness with Tony Irving on 5 July through Duskdarter....all details on that fucker to come soon....

Mizutani & Sagbohan

I have a much grittier version of the Sagbohan with some weird keyboard effects but couldn't find it anywhere so sorryoo. Mizutani on guitar in the first video is one of The Scrapes gods...known most infamously for his work with Les Rallizes Denudes. As for Sagbohan...I just love his work and made sure I had some of his tracks on my phone when I travelled around Benin last year. Beautiful vodouns music.

But what am I trying to say with this combo of videos....up to you to decipher.

See some of your faces on Saturday night. And don't forget there's some serious announcing coming up and you will soon enough be able to hear a new Scrapes piece on a Sonic Masala compilation in the nearish future...probably..

Announcements

We'll do a proper news update sometime soon but this is a just a quick hello to say our next Gig is

17 May
The New Globe Theatre
Fortitude Valley, Brisbane
with The Stress of Leisure and Infinity Broke (it's their album launch)
8pmish probably.

Not sure what tickets cost but it's going to be a killer night and Ryan and I will freak everyone out as usual. Don't miss it.

We also have this gig coming up:

Supporting the Dune Rats at their gig at the Zoo once again in Fortitude Valley on the 28th of June.

After that....well we have all sorts of exciting things happening including a lot of gigs at a certain West End establishment....announcements on that one soon....it'll be in your face don't worry.

One big thing coming up is the release of a new album by an ensemble that's been kicking about since I got back from Ghana...a duo between myself and Tony Irving on drums (Ascension)....Void Frontiers...some serious violin and drums free jazz freakout....as brutal as Brotzmann and as tear-jerking as Jenkins. The album will be out as a download only number on Duskdarter Records, 5th July with a launch at the Waiting Room in West End with artwork by Melbourne-based artist Tom Reddington.

THIS is what Tony does to drums:

See you at a gig and keep your eyes stuck to this space for more updates and other bullshit.

Voyeur

Live footage from our performance at the Beetle Bar last Saturday the 3rd May at PsychHighWay 3. Had no idea we were being filmed. Cool videos....particularly the second one. Nice detail on my Dagbamba smock. Since I played the Northern Ghanaian Gonje or Gondze fiddle on Saturday night I thought I'd best pay my respects and wear the appropriate traditional wear. I bought that bad boy under a tree down an alley somewhere in Tamale off a UN driver's cousin. Anyway respect and love to the cultures and traditions of Ghana. As for Ryan he's wearing the traditional tasseled shirt of the Karaoke Cowboy.

We have quite a few gigs in the Brisbane area to announce coming up that we're very excited about.

Next one is 17 May at the New Globe Theatre in Fortitude Valley with The Stress of Leisure and Infinity Broke (featuring former members of Bluebottle Kiss and stuff).

Other gigs to announce will be in June and July....you're gonna see a lot of us soon. Just look at these videos....you can't afford to miss us right....

Dear fiends of Scrape,

This week sees the live appearance of we Scrapes in Brisbane for the first time since 2012. This is not to be missed.

First we have a quiet one tomorrow night, 30 April 8pm, FREE at The End, 73 Vulture St, West End. This will be a droned out warm up for the big one:

3 May - Psych High Way 3 at the Beetle Bar, Upper Roma St. 8pm. $12/$10.
I know I don't have to tell those of you who bother to read this site but I'm going to get on my high horse anyway: no two Scrapes gigs are ever the same. Come to both.

Violin Nerds - and Ryan nerds - Pay Heed

Hello Scrapers,

So while we Scrapes are working away at new pieces I would like to point something out to any of you who are jonesing to nerd out on all things obscure and violin. I have another blog called UNDERGROUND VIOLIN at which I post various ramblings, videos, essays, audio whatever pertainig to radical and underground violin music of all types. I keep it separate so as to not bore the shit out of those Scrapes followers who don't care much for knowing the quantity of rosin used on a northern Ghanaian Gondze bow in 1867. For those of you who do:

Go here: http://undergroundviolin.blogspot.com.au

and sign up for the newsletter etc so you know when I get inspired to post something...which is quite often really. Latest post is about South African Zulu Township Jive fiddle music....incredible stuff!

I also place updates on my solo stuff and there's a page dedicated to that there as well.

GO ON

And while you're at it why not leave the occasional comment here and there. Be good to know who's reading this fucking thing...

ALSO ALSO ALSO Ryan has just brought out a collection of NEW SONGS in solo form HERE

While you're there order a Maryettas "Great Australian Rope Trick" tape before they're Long Gone.

Can't wait to Scrape your faces off at some upcoming gigs.

The Scrapes New Album in the Works

Dear Scrapes fiends,

We trust this message finds you all well. It's been a long time between posts on this website but so what.

So The Scrapes have been in hiding recording new pieces which will make up the new Scrapes album hopefully ready for release sometime this year. One of the tracks will most likely appear in a compilation of sorts for a label of sorts that we can't really tell you anything about now but we'll let you know what's going on when the time is right.

One thing we can tell you is that the new album will be a dark journey with a new percussive element (NOT a drummer) that will freak you all out more than ever. Along with this new direction are the usual sparse La Monte Young drone outs and doom of the sexiest variety but all progressing along into uncharted territory. Trust us....you've never heard anything like some of this shit before....

In the future we will also be playing some gigs around Brisbane and hopefully elsewhere. If you're overseas and following us please do get in touch via email planetofthescrapes (at) gmail (dot) com and buy us a plane ticket or 5 so we can come and blow your minds.

If you haven't already google copies of our albums Electric Mourning Blues and Kali Yuga Sunrise and try and pick one up from a trusty record store as soon there will be none! We still have Kali Yuga vinyl in stock at the POTS store so stop on by and order if you need it.

See you at some gigs.....

The Archdrude Speaks on Adam Cadell Solo

Hello all,

So as this blog gets increasingly neglected I must implore all to look up The Scrapes on facebook for more direct and constant updates. We definitely have some things coming up in the New Year!

So on a Scrapes related note there is a gig happening here in Brisbane tonight with yours truly Adam Cadell and the down downerhome cuntry of Mr. Jackson Reid Briggs of Nikko and The Maryettas infame.

2 Jan
The End
Up From The Swamp - Adam Cadell + Jackson Briggs
8pm
FREEEEE

Don't fucking miss it. And here's another reason why. Mssr Julian Cope el Archdrude supreme has run across my solo works which you can find HERE for a small donation or even free if you're a cheap bastard. He's given me a very nice little write up in his New Years Drudion over HERE

Here's an excerpt: "Anticipate instead the rural joys of Henry Flynt’s bucolic hoedown-a-thons but enlarged into La Monte Young levels of monotony, or imagine even an unaccompanied Tony Conrad embarking on a Faustless OUTSIDE THE DREAM SYNDICATE. For this single meditation remains at all times on course, even when Mr Cadell’s instrument takes on a curious French horn timbre." Julian Cope, Head Heritage

Here's the poster for the gig tonight:
